Dr. David E. Handman is a highly experienced trauma and acute care surgeon with specialized expertise in critical care medicine. With over two decades of medical practice, he has provided comprehensive surgical and critical care services across multiple institutions, including Level 2 trauma centers, intensive care units, and private surgical practices.
Dr. Handman earned his B.A. in Genetics and Development from Cornell University and his M.D. from the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. He completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Beth Israel Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. His extensive training has equipped him with expertise in trauma surgery, laparoscopic procedures, surgical critical care, and perioperative management of critically ill patients.
Currently, Dr. Handman serves as a trauma and acute care surgeon with SAMGI and an intensivist with Life Medical Professionals, providing inpatient and outpatient surgical care for trauma patients and managing complex cases in medical, surgical, and cardiac intensive care units. Previously, he was a general and critical care surgeon with Kaiser Permanente, where he helped establish a surgical critical care service and served on multiple quality improvement committees.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Handman played a critical role as a locum tenens intensivist, providing emergency medical critical care coverage to hospitals experiencing patient overflow. His volunteer work includes surgical missions with organizations such as Project Medishare for Haiti, Aloha Medical Mission, and the World Surgical Foundation, where he has contributed his expertise in underserved and austere environments.
Dr. Handman has been actively involved in resident and medical student education, receiving recognition for his teaching efforts. His research and clinical contributions have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences, covering topics such as surgical outcomes, critical care management, and advanced laparoscopic techniques.
Dr. Handman holds board certifications in general surgery and critical care surgery through the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is licensed to practice in California and holds active certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
His professional interests include trauma surgery, perioperative critical care, antimicrobial stewardship, and surgical education, and he remains committed to advancing patient care through clinical excellence, mentorship, and global health initiatives.
