Introduction

Dr. David I. Kaufer, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician with over 30 years of experience providing comprehensive care across a wide range of medical settings. He earned his Medical Doctor (MD) degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1993 after completing his undergraduate studies in Biology and Chemistry at the University of San Diego. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, California, in 1996. Since obtaining board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1996—most recently recertified in 2016—Dr. Kaufer has cultivated a diverse clinical career emphasizing internal medicine, urgent care, geriatrics, home-based medical services, and palliative care​.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kaufer has held a variety of leadership and clinical roles. He provided internal medicine and urgent care services at CML Medical Group from 1995 to 2006, followed by over a decade of delivering home-based medical care to geriatric and adult patients through Mobile Physician Services and Visiting MD. His expertise in home-based medical care has continued with Stellar Providers, where he has served since 2017. Additionally, he worked in urgent care and internal medicine at El Centro Regional Medical Clinic and provided care at Centro Medico El Cajon and Centro Medico Escondido from 2008 to 2021. Dr. Kaufer’s leadership extends to his role as Medical Director at LightBridge Hospice and Palliative Care since 2006, and he previously served as Medical Director of Brighton Place Nursing Home from 2010 to 2016. He currently holds the position of Medical Director for San Diego PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), a role he has held since 2021​.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Kaufer has dedicated a portion of his career to medical education. He has served as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla from 1996 to 1999 and as a Preceptor in the Primary Care Associate Program at Stanford University Medical Center from 1996 to 1997. He also contributed to medical training as an Assistant Clinical Professor for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of California, Riverside, from 2016 to 2018​.

Dr. Kaufer has been actively involved in medical research, with contributions spanning cellular biology, hepatology, and immunology. He conducted research at the VA Medical Center and University of California, San Diego, focusing on the cellular localization of malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal protein adducts in hepatic liver peroxidation. His work at the La Jolla Cancer and Research Foundation included studies on limb development and cartilage formation. Additionally, his research at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation examined predictors of response in patients with hepatitis C treated with alpha interferon​.
