J. Richard Claywell joined the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) in 1993 and was certified as a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) in 1994. He has served on the NACVA Executive Advisory Board (1995-1997), been on the NACVA training team since 1994, and has taught numerous courses for NACVA as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Internal Revenue Service, Texas Society of Enrolled Agents, Center for Professional Education, University of Houston, National Business Institute and other professional organizations.
From 1997 to 2004, Richard served on the Government Valuation Analyst Board (GVA), which supervised the accreditation and continuing education of government officials (IRS) in business valuations. He served as Chairman of the GVA Board from 1999 to 2001. He has been an active member of the valuation examination team since 1995 and served as its Chairman from 1998 to 2000.
Richard has been active with assisting business owners in determining the value of their companies and developing exit plan strategies. Also in 2001, he qualified for the the Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) designation from NACVA, demonstrating his skills determining fraud and analyzing fraudulent transactions. To further help Richard be of service to business owners, he earned the Certified in Fraud Deterrence (CFD) designation from the International Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (IACVA) and the Accredited in Business Valuations (ABV) designation from the AICPA in 2006.
Richard is the chief architect of the software program Business Valuation Pro (BVMPro) and its report writer, Business Valuation Quality Control Editor (BVQ). BVMPro is marketed through the software division of ValuSource.
Richard has written for many publications, including Business Today and The Texas Law Reporter and has coauthored two books, Business Valuation Strategies, Capitalization and Discount Rates: The Value of Risk.
He is active in the Houston Chapter of CPAs, and is president of NACVA's Texas State Chapter. Richard's special areas of focus are in determining the value for closely held companies and assisting business owners in successfully exiting from their businesses. Richard has valued companies for determining a sales price for exit/succession planning, adequacy of life insurance, buy/sell agreements, employee stock ownership plans, estate and gift, family limited partnerships, determining goodwill, disruption of business, dissenting shareholder actions, divorce, economic loss and intellectual property.
