Joy Stankowski MD
Dr. Joy Stankowski graduated from Haverford College with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and completed her Doctor of Medicine degree at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. She then completed a dual residency program in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, and a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry, with a certification in the subspecialty of Forensic Psychiatry.
Dr. Stankowski has an extensive clinical, administrative, and forensic history. For over twenty years she has worked as a clinical and administrative psychiatrist for the state of Ohio, and as a forensic evaluator for Ohio courts. From 2005 to 2017, she was a lead federal surveyor of psychiatric hospitals for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. She has expertise in system standard of care and her accomplishments include developing a Center of Forensic Excellence providing education and training. She continues to teach clinicians and courts and is on faculty at numerous institutions, including Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Stankowski is a member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) and has served in various leadership positions. She has performed over 1000 forensic evaluations and is experienced in providing testimony and depositions. She has been qualified as an expert in the field of psychiatry in courts throughout Ohio. Her areas of interest include developmental delay and neurocognitive disorders, elder care, threat assessment, and health care systems.
