Introduction

Kevin Heacock, MD, is a flight surgeon and board-certified psychiatrist at Wright- Patterson AFB, OH, with several clinical, educational, and leadership roles. These include current positions as Aerospace Medicine Branch Chief at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and Assistant Professor at Wright State University (WSU) Boonshoft School of Medicine. He has a strong academic background, having completed his MD in 2005 at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, an Internal Medicine year at Main Line Health System/Lankenau Medical Center, and a residency in Psychiatry at Wright State University. Earlier in his career, he served as a Flight Surgeon on Andersen AFB, Guam, as Psychiatry Chief Resident at WSU, and as Neuropsychiatry Branch Chief at the USAFSAM Aeromedical Consultation Service. Dr. Heacock has consulted for NASA and conducted psychiatric assessment interviews for individuals in the pool of top 30 Astronaut Applicants. He has presented at national and international conferences related to Aviation Mental Health and Risk Assessment for return to flying following psychiatric illness. He has a popular Substack and Podcast called The Flight Shrink about the basics of aviation mental health.
