Dr. Michael MacIntyre is a board-certified general and forensic psychiatrist with extensive experience in medicolegal and psycholegal evaluations. He graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned his medical degree from Ohio State University. He completed his general psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA, Dr. MacIntyre serves as Assistant Program Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship and as a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Once practicing, he obtained certification as a healthcare ethics consultation (HEC-C).
Dr. MacIntyre is a trusted expert in forensic psychiatry, with experience serving on court panels of approved psychiatric experts for Los Angeles, Sonoma, and Fresno Counties. As a Qualified Medical Examiner (QME) for the state of California and an attending psychiatrist at the Veterans Affairs Los Angeles Healthcare System, he has familiarity with workplace and disability issues. He also serves as an Expert Reviewer for the California Medical Board. Dr. MacIntyre has consulted with attorneys for cases of testamentary capacity, undue influence, personal injury, PTSD, mens rea, competency, mental health diversion, fitness for duty, and medical board complaints.
An accomplished academic and speaker, Dr. MacIntyre has lectured nationally at institutions such as UCLA, Mount Sinai Hospital, the University of Chicago, the University of Alberta, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) annual conference. His conference presentations include topics like forensic evaluations in aging populations, ethical issues in psychiatry, and insanity defenses.
Dr. MacIntyre has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as the ethical implications of emerging neuroscience technologies and the intersection of artificial intelligence and psychiatric evaluations. He has published on issues of physician practice including boundary violations, reporting duties, and safety considerations in clinical practice. His works have appeared in The Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, Behavioral Sciences and the Law, and Psychiatric Times, among others.
