Dr. Richard Zumwalt is a distinguished neuropsychologist with a specialization in brain-related disorders, psychological evaluations, and psychotherapy. He is a California Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) approved psychological evaluator, with extensive expertise in personal injury and workers' compensation evaluations, especially in cases involving traumatic brain injury, trauma, anxiety, depression, and addictions. He also has extensive experience in conducting pre-employment psychological evaluations for public safety candidates.
Dr. Zumwalt holds a PhD in Psychology from Northcentral University, where his dissertation focused on the relationship between self-efficacy and situated cognition in relapse situations. He furthered his specialization with post-doctoral training in Neuropsychology at Fielding Graduate University and advanced training in Neuropsychological Assessment at the University of California, Berkeley.
His professional career includes roles as a Neuropsychologist at Zumwalt Psychological Services, where he oversees a team of pre/post-doctoral students and interns. Additionally, he is a Neuropsychologist at Premier First Responder Psychological Services, providing critical incident debriefing, crisis response, and fitness for duty evaluations as well as providing neuropsychological services for The Counseling Team International.
Before transitioning to neuropsychology, Dr. Zumwalt had a notable career in law enforcement, serving as a police officer with the Huntington Beach Police Department for nearly two decades. His roles included Beach Liaison, Patrol Officer, and member of the Special Enforcement Team, Peer Support Team, and Patrol Rifle Team. He also worked as a Clinical Director at LEAD Recovery Center and Hired Power, where he was responsible for substance abuse and mental health screening, treatment planning, and providing confidential recovery assistance for high-profile clients.
Dr. Zumwalt's academic contributions include teaching and coaching at various colleges, where he led degree-required courses and coached football. Notably, Dr. Zumwalt was a member of Arizona State University’s only Rose Bowl Champion Football Team and played professional football with the Los Angeles Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Sacramento Surge.
His work has been recognized with various honors, certifications, and continuing education credentials, including advanced POST certification and recognition as a Drug Recognition Expert. He is an active member of the International Neuropsychological Society, Society for Police and Criminal Psychology, and the American Psychological Association.
